Month of Action on the AT&T-T-Mobile Merger: Save the Best for Last!

The last day of August was a game changer for consumer advocates nationwide and Media Literacy Project. The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed an anti-trust suit against the proposed AT&T-T-Mobile merger on August 31st.

August was declared the Month of Action on the AT&T-T-Mobile Merger by our partners at Media Action Grassroots Network (MAG-Net) and The Center for Media Justice. As a MAG-Net anchor organization, we ramped up our communications around the merger and asked you to do the same. To put the Month of Action in context of New Mexico, Media Literacy Project has developed a little time line to chart our activity in the days approaching the “Big News.”

1st week of August

Fresh off of our Op-Ed opposing the merger in the Las Cruces Sun-News, Media Literacy Project gets word from our partners at MAG-Net that August is the Month of Action. MLP throws the “Stop the Merger” sign up on all communications outreach (social networking & website) and ask YOU to sign the pledge to take action against the merger and contact your Congressional delegation.

2nd week of August

MLP continues to ask for your support in contacting your Congressperson via social networking outlets. We strategize with our MAG-Net partners to participate in an NM Radio Tour to put the AT&T-T-Mobile “on blast” on radio airwaves around the state. We work diligently on developing and creating an Op-Ed for the Albuquerque Journal.

3rd week of August

MLP Op-Ed runs in the Business Outlook section of the Albuquerque Journal. On the NM Radio Tour, MLP conducts one live and two taped radio interviews that reached over 19,000 New Mexicans and West Texans. MLP Executive Director represents New Mexico on the Federal Communications Commission Consumer Advisory Committee in Washington, D.C.

4th week of August

MLP conducts one taped radio interview that reaches almost 12,000 New Mexicans regarding the merger. MLP talks “merger” on the Histories of Social and Community Activism panel at the Albuquerque Cultural Conference

The last day of August

The United States Department of Justice files an anti-trust lawsuit against the AT&T-T-Mobile merger. MLP releases a statement on merger and thanks YOU for your support.

What a way to finish the Month of Action on a high note! MLP would like to thank all of our partners at MAG-Net and the Media and Democracy Coalition. You can help MAG-Net thank the United States Department of Justice by calling the Media Justice storyline at 1.888.638.1150 ext.1. Please continue to contact your Congressperson and urge them to ask the FCC to follow the DOJ’s lead and “Stop the Merger.”
