Avila
Haven is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is currently a student at Central New Mexico Community College studying fine arts studio. Haven enjoys volunteering as a childcare provider at the Domestic Violence Resource Center. She found her experience in Girl Tech both challenging and rewarding. Haven is a graduate of the 2011 Girl Tech Collective program.

Marroquín
Originally from Chaparral, New Mexico, Lourdes Marroquín now lives in Albuquerque. She recently graduated from Anthony Charter School and now attends the University of New Mexico with her sister Saida. Lourdes is interested in working in the medical field and is currently majoring in radiology. Lourdes is a 2010 Girl Tech Collective graduate.

Saida Marroquín, originally from Chaparral, lives in Albuquerque and attends the University of New Mexico with her sister Lourdes. Saida is majoring in health science in pursuit of becoming a radiologist. Saida is a 2010 Girl Tech Collective graduate.

Olavarría Gallegos
Luna was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She currently attends Albuquerque Academy and is an active participant in KUNM’s Generation Justice. Luna volunteers with Amigos de las Americas and looks forward to working in a rural village in Latin America next summer. She is passionate about activism and plans to work in the field of journalism. Luna plays Latin percussion and piano, and is a 2011 graduate of Girl Tech Collective.

Alma
Jurado
Alma was born in Albuquerque and raised in both Albuquerque and Los Lunas, New Mexico. In high school, Alma worked at the New Mexico Teen Pregnancy Coalition where she became more involved and interested in the issue of teen pregnancy. She is currently in her junior year at the University of New Mexico and is double majoring in biology and Spanish. She plans to attend grad school and work in the field of medicine. Alma is a graduate of the 2010 Girl Tech Collective program.

When There is Life There is Hope, is a personal story told by Yazmin Avila Hernandez and her mother about the challenging circumstances surrounding the birth of Yazmin’s brother.
This sometimes distressing and hopeful story illustrates the importance of access to information for new mothers and the right to advocate for medical care.

Yazmin, originally from Mexico, has delivered trainings on domestic violence prevention with Enlace Comunitario’s youth program. Yazmin currently attends Albuquerque High School. She loves new challenges and helping others in any way possible. She is passionate about justice and plans to become a lawyer or a nurse. Yazmin is a 2011 Girl Tech Collective graduate.
