Media & Body Image
Media & Body Image is a multimedia educational resource that examines the self-concept of physical appearance and healthy body and mind through a media literacy lens.
The content on this DVD has been designed for presentations and discussions in classrooms, community organizations, professional development trainings, and other group settings. It can be used with learners ages 11 to adult.
What’s on the DVD?
- Two presentations using 38 media examples from television commercials, magazine ads, and excerpts from TV shows. Each presentation lasts 45-60 minutes.
- A printable discussion guide you can use with the media examples on the disc. The discussion guide includes questions and suggested answers, activities, and education standards, and resources.
- A media gallery you can use to display individual media examples in any order.
- Media examples are captioned and the discussion guide is available in large print.
Learners will:
- Learn how to deconstruct messages using a media justice framework
- Discuss what constitutes healthy and unhealthy body image
- Access resources for making your own media
- Discover ways to challenge negative perceptions around body image
