Initially a co-sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), New Mexico Congressman Ben Ray Lujan announced that he will no longer support the bill earlier today. Just last week, Media Literacy Project participated in a day of action to urge New Mexican Internet users to contact their New Mexico Congressional Delegation. As coalition partners in Latinos for Internet Freedom and Black Voices for Internet Freedom, Media Literacy Project has also created a graphic to raise the awareness of the negative impact of these bills on New Mexico’s most vulnerable communities.

Andrea Quijada, the executive director of Media Literacy Project, issued the following comments:

“Media Literacy Project is delighted that Congressman Lujan has pulled his support from the Stop Online Piracy Act. By listening to the voices of New Mexicans and re-evaluating his initial co-sponsorship of the bill, Congressman Lujan has shown himself to be a leader in good character. It is good to know that when faced with the decision of protecting the bottom line of the corporate 1% or protecting Internet freedom for thousands of New Mexicans, Congressman Lujan chose his constituents.”

Media Literacy Project is currently serving a two year appointment to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Consumer Advisory Committee.
